United Homeless Healthcare Partners (UHHP) is pleased to offer several exciting new workshops in 2012. Each workshop series is a part of a larger initiative to increase capacity, share lessons learned and create communities of practice that examine innovative ways to serve homeless and chronically homeless individuals and families in Los Angeles County.

Steps to Successful Disability Applications - Introductory Course
This introductory class is the first in a series of three classes leading to the "Certification in Preparing Disability Claims" and provides an opportunity for homeless advocates to better understand the framework and overall process for applying for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and/or Social Security Disability Insurance benefits. Participants will also better understand their role as advocates, how to engage clients, gather appropriate documentation and work in a team environment to complete a comprehensive disability application.
During this training, students will:
- Describe the basics of the disability determination process;
- Understand the barriers for homeless applicants and strategies for overcoming them;
- Describe specific strategies used to engage clients;
- Describe the components of the disability application;
- Describe the best methods for gathering documentation
This training is provided by advocates with over 20 years of experience processing benefits applications for disabled individuals specifically designed for case managers, benefits advocates and other homeless advocates that plan to or are currently assisting clients prepare SSI/SSDI applications.
